Surprise party honors couple on 50th anniversary

ADA — Mr. and Mrs. Larry Large, Ada, were honored with a surprise anniversary celebration Saturday, Nov. 14, at 8 p.m. in East Central University ballroom. Hosts were their children Stephen and Deborah Gooding, Oklahoma City, and David and Patti Binger, Midlothian, Texas.

Larry Large and Carol Kay Cash were married Nov. 7, 1959, at Fittstown.

Both are graduates of East Central State College with master’s degrees in Education. Mr. Large taught history and coached football in Elmore City and Noble, and was a principal at Noble, Fittstown, Stratford, and for the Williamson County School District in Franklin, Tenn.

Mrs. Large taught English and Reading for many years in Whitebead, Noble, Seminole and Konawa where she retired. After moving to Franklin, Tenn., in 1996, she taught fifth grade another seven years for the Williamson County School District.

Mr. and Mrs. Large have worked closely with country music artist and Ada native Blake Shelton. Mr. Large played drums in the original McSwingers Band where Shelton began his career. Upon Shelton’s graduation from Ada High School, Mr. and Mrs. Large helped Shelton get set up in Nashville and introduced him to his earliest contacts in the music industry. Mrs. Large who is currently the president of the Blake Shelton Fan Club, also operated the fan club organization until this year. Mr. Large also traveled on the road with Shelton for a few years working as his merchandise manager.

Both are officially retired and living in Ada, however Mr. Large currently works with ECU’s education department as an advisor to student teachers from time to time. They enjoy traveling the country and spending time with family, friends, and their dog Jewel.

Among those who attended the surprise 50th anniversary party were their children, Deborah Gooding and husband Stephen of Oklahoma City; Patti Binger and husband David of Midlothian, Texas; and Carol’s step-mother Melba Cash of Blanchard; Larry’s sister Linda McGaha of Konawa; and many cousins, aunts and uncles as well as friends from all over Oklahoma and surrounding states. (Special note: as this story went to print, it is confirmed that Carol did, in fact, not physically harm her daughters when she realized she was at her own surprise party!)
