Former Adan named one of most powerful women in Texas

Ada — ROCKWALL, Texas — The Texas Diversity Council hosted its sixth Annual Diversity and Leadership conference April 7-9, which included our Most Powerful and Influential Women of Texas Breakfast.

The council dedicated this time to recognize these women for all of their achievements. Serving as master of ceremonies was David Toomey, president of CIGNA HealthCare of Texas. Presenting the awards was Lesleigh Robertson, event chair, Luby’s Inc.

Other speakers included Dr. Harry Gibbs, chief diversity officer of The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Carol Alvarado, Texas State representative, Jennifer Vogel- SVP general counsel and secretary and chief compliance officer Continental Airlines, Inc, and Angie Sherrell, vice president and general manager GS Marketing, Inc. Sherrell is a 1979 graduate of Ada High School and 1984 graduate of East Central University.

All of these ladies were also winners of this distinguished award along with other women being honored that morning.

Attendees heard about Leadership, Diversity in the Workplace and the Top 10 on how to be successful from Angie Sherrell. It’s no longer just about being powerful in the home, it’s about now being powerful in the corporate and business roles, said Texas Diversity Council CEO/Founder Dennis Kennedy.

One of the examples was given by Jennifer Vogel (Continental) about how far women have come is from an article that was written for male supervisors in 1943 on how to handle women in the workplace. These are just a few "pointers (from www.roadandtravel.com/roadhumor/1943tansportation.htm)."

"Give the female employee a definite day-long schedule of duties so that they’ll keep busy without bothering the management for instructions every few minutes. Numerous properties say that women make excellent workers when they have their jobs cut out for them, but that they lack initiative in finding work themselves.

"Whenever possible, let the inside employee change from one job to another at some time during the day. Women are inclined to be less nervous and happier with change.

"Give every girl an adequate number of rest periods during the day. You have to make some allowances for feminine psychology. A girl has more confidence and is more efficient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and wash her hands several times a day."
